West point graduate and Army veteran John James ’04 put a dozen cadets through an impromptu push-up drill Thursday when they visited him in Washington D.C.

U.S. Rep. James, a Shelby Township Republican who represents the 10th District in Macomb and Oakland counties, is seen in a short video ordering the drill in the uniform-clad cadets in a hallway of the Transportation and Infrastructure hearing room in Rayburn House Office Building, near the U.S. Capitol in Washington. One cadet can be seen smiling.

The cadets from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point were visiting Congress, and James talked to them for about 20 minutes before commanding the drill while a couple of surprised onlookers watched. After counting out 10 and then one more push up, James stands up and with a smile orders the group to “recover,” the video shows.

“I had the privilege of welcoming a dozen West Point cadets to Washington, DC this week,” James said in a written statement. “Of course, I got them in formation and we had a little fun with a few push-ups. Thank goodness I did legs that morning” while working out.
