West Point Participates In Commemorating 70th Anniversary Of U.S.-ROK Mutual Defense Treaty

COL Sean Morrow ’01, director of Center for Combating Terrorism; MAJ Si Park ’11, assistant professor in Math Department; and U.S. Military Academy cadets from the Korean American Relations Seminar (KARS) participated in a ceremony Oct. 1 in Fort Lee, New Jersey, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the signing of the U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK) Alliance. 

Nearly 1,000 guests attended the event, which included remarks from retired LTG Bernard Champoux, former commanding general of Eighth Army, Morrow on behalf of USMA and other current and former senior leaders, along with local and state representatives.

During the event, cadets marched as escorts with the Korean War veterans in celebration of the two countries’ alliance. On Oct. 1, 1953, the U.S. and the Republic of Korea signed the Mutual Defense Treaty in Washington D.C. 

The U.S.-ROK Mutual Defense Treaty was signed after the end of the Korean War, which committed the U.S. to helping South Korea in defending itself from North Korea.
