Roedy ’70 Rotunda Dedication at West Point Jefferson Hall

Category: Grad News
Class Years:

West Point Association of Graduates (WPAOG) and Academy leaders will join guests at the Roedy Rotunda dedication within the West Point Library on May 5, honoring the vision and leadership of William “Bill” Roedy ’70, and his family. A distinguished gathering space at the beating heart of the Library, the Rotunda will serve as a permanent forum for intellectual exchange, narrative dialogue, and the kind of rigorous inquiry that has developed generations of leaders of character for the Army and the nation. Its inaugural programming will explore the Cold War era that shaped Roedy’s own career, connecting that history directly to the strategic challenges facing today’s cadets.

Bill Roedy’s connection to West Point is foundational and personal. A graduate of the Academy and combat veteran, Roedy’s formative experiences in the military prepared him for a notable career in global media, as well as leadership roles across global health. As President and CEO of MTV Networks International during one of the most consequential decades of the Cold War, he worked from a conviction that culture and ideas, carried with purpose across borders, could reshape the world. He pioneered the expansion of American media into more than 160 countries that had long been closed to them. When Mikhail Gorbachev later reflected on that era, he said what Roedy had long believed: “Music can be more powerful than missiles.”

Roedy describes his post-military life through the lens of what West Point forged in him. The instinct for action. The commitment to integrity. The identity of the soldier-citizen whose service does not end with the uniform. The Roedy Rotunda is a physical expression of that conviction: a space where the next generation of soldier-citizens will encounter the ideas, histories, and hard conversations that will shape who they become as leaders.

“West Point instilled in me that service and leadership are lifelong missions.

Whether in uniform, through the reach of media, or in the world of global health, the objective has always been clear: to lead, to inspire, and to serve,” said Roedy. “May every cadet who walks through this space discover their own lifelong mission — and have the courage to pursue it with conviction.”

West Point Library Rotunda

The Roedy Rotunda sits at the heart of the West Point Library, a passageway of the Long Gray Line where cadets have gathered, reflected, and prepared for years. It will serve as a dedicated venue for sustained cross-sector dialogue that connects enduring lessons to emerging challenges. Its inaugural programming will explore the Cold War era that shaped Roedy’s own career, connecting that history directly to the strategic challenges facing today’s cadets. Its inaugural programming will bring the Cold War era to life through the lens of Roedy’s own career, examining the intersection of hard power and soft power and connecting that history directly to the strategic and geopolitical challenges facing today’s cadets.

“The Rotunda grounds our legacy and our tradition in a physical space, and from there shapes innovative officers and soldier-citizens prepared for a lifetime of service,” said Brigadier General Shane Reeves ’96, Dean of the Academic Board. “That is the story of West Point. And it is Bill Roedy’s story.”

Ideas need a home before they become scholarship. The Rotunda provides that, a space for the kind of sustained dialogue that informs the research, publications, and podcasts West Point’s academic enterprise produces for audiences well beyond the Hudson Valley.
