Cadet Marathon Team Honors Fallen USMA Graduates

Categories: Cadet News, Clubs, Grad News

On March 22, cadets, graduates, families, and members of the West Point community gathered for the 10th annual Fallen Comrades Half Marathon—an event rooted in remembrance, service, and the enduring bond of the Long Gray Line.

Approximately 800 participants ran and rucked the 13.1-mile course, honoring 13 fallen West Point graduates who made the ultimate sacrifice during Vietnam and the Global War on Terrorism. Each mile of the course was dedicated to one of these graduates, with personal tributes displayed along the route, ensuring their stories remain present with every step taken.

Among those honored was CW3 Stephen Dwyer Jr. ’09, whose legacy was shared by his mother, Gail Dwyer ’81. Her remarks reminded participants that behind every name is a family, a story, and a life lived in service to something greater than self. “He lived his life every day with purpose,” she shared. “Never quit, never give up.”

The event also reflected the generational strength of the Long Gray Line. Families of graduates ran alongside cadets, including those honoring parents and grandparents who served demonstrating how the legacy of West Point extends across generations.

For cadets on the course, the experience reinforced the meaning behind the uniform they will one day wear. Passing each mile marker, they were reminded not only of sacrifice but of the responsibility they carry forward.

This annual race is more than a physical challenge; it is a reaffirmation of West Point’s mission to develop leaders of character and a powerful example of how the Long Gray Line continues to honor its own.
