On April 12-13, the Civil and Military Engineering Club hosted the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Upstate New York-Canada Student Symposium. Cadets from ten schools gathered to compete in a variety of civil engineering competitions. The competitions included the American Institute of Steel Construction Steel Bridge Competition, in which students designed and constructed small-scale (20 ft long) steel bridges. Another component was the ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition, where students innovatively engineered canoes made from concrete. The Final component was the Daniel Mead Paper Competition, where students delivered presentations on the ethical considerations engineers face when responding to infrastructure disasters. The United States Military Academy was well represented with cadet Owen Hodges ’25 placing first place in the Mead Paper Competition and the USMA Concrete Canoe team placing first overall.
