COL David W. Hensel ’01 assumed command of the 193rd Infantry Brigade during a June 26 change of command ceremony at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

Commissioned from the U.S. Military Academy in 2001, Hensel brings more than two decades of Army leadership and special operations experience to the role. After completing the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2006, he served with the 1st Special Forces Group in Okinawa, Japan, where he deployed to Iraq as a Stability Transition Team advisor supporting coordination between the Kurdish Regional Government and Iraqi National Government. He has also served with the 10th Special Forces Group and the Joint Staff’s J3 Deputy Directorate for Special Operations.

MG Daryl O. Hood, commanding general of U.S. Army Training Center and Fort Jackson, welcomed Hensel to the brigade, praising the leadership and experience he brings to one of the Army’s premier initial entry training organizations.

In accepting command, Hensel reflected on the responsibility of preparing the Army’s newest Soldiers.

“It’s a great privilege that the American people have given us responsibility for their sons and daughters,” Hensel said. “I’m deeply honored to be joining this impressive team as we train and develop those young people to be the best versions of themselves and, more importantly, to be American Soldiers.”
