Jim Nicholson ’61, former Secretary of Veterans Affairs, has been named the inaugural recipient of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Business and Civic Leadership Award. The award recognizes individuals whose leadership and contributions have made a significant impact on business, public engagement and veterans’ causes.
Nicholson built a distinguished career in public service, including six years as secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs under President George W. Bush and service as U.S. ambassador to the Holy See (Vatican). He also served as chairman of the Republican National Committee. Throughout his career, Nicholson has remained a strong advocate for veterans and their families, working to help those who have served successfully transition to civilian life.
Nicholson was recognized for his contributions to two U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation initiatives: Hire Our Heroes, which has helped more than 1.5 million veterans seeking civilian employment and facilitated more than 500,000 job placements, and the National Civics Bee, which encourages young Americans to become more engaged and informed citizens. Both initiatives reflect Nicholson’s longstanding commitment to service, leadership and strengthening communities.
“It has been very satisfying to have helped so many veterans find jobs and to help awaken America to the importance of civics education,” Nicholson said. “I appreciate being recognized for my work on these two fronts, and I so appreciate the tremendous work of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.”
The award was presented Oct. 27 in Washington, D.C., at the inaugural U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation Annual Business and Civic Leadership Award Gala.
