West Point Society of Annapolis Hosts Back-to-Back Tailgates

Category: Society News

The West Point Society of Annapolis (WPSOA) showed its support for Army athletics with back-to-back tailgate events Sept. 25-26, welcoming Army families, parents, and guests ahead of Sprint Football and Rugby matchups against Navy.

The weekend began Friday, Sept. 25, as Army Sprint Football traveled to Annapolis for the annual Star contest. The WPSOA teamed with Sprint Football parents to host a pre-game catered tailgate for nearly 150 attendees, featuring sandwiches, fruit, drinks and desserts. The gathering provided an opportunity for Army families and supporters to connect before kickoff—and the celebration continued as Army dominated on both sides of the ball to defeat Navy, 21-12.

The following day, WPSOA continued its support of Army athletics with a tailgate for the Army Rugby Team. About 100 parents and guests gathered before the match, with rugby parents preparing their traditional pre-game buffet while WPSOA provided coffee and donuts.

The cool, windy and overcast conditions made the hot coffee and donuts especially welcome. The tailgate also featured a visit from U.S. Military Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. James B. Bartholomees III and Director of Athletics Tom “Theo” Theodorakis, whose presence provided an added boost to Army supporters before the match.

Although Army Rugby battled throughout the contest, Navy ultimately prevailed, 26-14.

Across both days, the WPSOA’s efforts helped create a welcoming atmosphere for Army families and supporters and demonstrated the Society’s continued commitment to supporting the Long Gray Line and Army teams when they compete in Annapolis.

The primary mission of the West Point Society of Annapolis is to support the exchange cadets during their fall semester at the U.S. Naval Academy, as well as other cadets traveling through the Annapolis area or visiting for club or athletic competition. In so doing, the WPSOA strives to serve West Point in Annapolis and Maryland by developing and sustaining programs that promote West Point, support graduates and cadets and reflect the values of West Point in Annapolis and the communities throughout Maryland.
