West Point Founders Day Celebrations Worldwide

Category: Grad News

Founders Day celebrations are underway across the nation and around the world, reflecting this year’s theme: “Our Enduring Link.” Organized by West Point Societies and supported by graduates everywhere, these gatherings strengthen connections across the Long Gray Line and reaffirm the shared bond to the United States Military Academy.

First observed in 1902, Founders Day commemorates March 16, 1802, when Thomas Jefferson signed the Military Peace Establishment Act, establishing the U.S. Military Academy as a permanent institution. Over time, the day has become an opportunity for graduates to reconnect and reflect on the enduring values that define West Point: Duty, Honor, Country.

This year, over 100 Founders Day events are taking place worldwide, from Texas to Thailand. Many gatherings also include cadet candidates and their families, as well as recipients of the Distinguished Graduate Award and the Nininger Award, creating meaningful opportunities for generations of the West Point community to come together.

A cherished tradition of Founders Day is recognizing the oldest and youngest graduates present, symbolizing the enduring connection between generations of leaders forged at West Point.

Society leaders play a central role in bringing these celebrations to life by organizing events, welcoming fellow graduates, and preserving traditions that keep the West Point network strong. At the same time, the graduates who attend—reconnecting with classmates and sharing in the camaraderie of the occasion—help sustain the spirit that defines the Long Gray Line.

WPAOG extends its sincere appreciation to every Society Leader and graduate who contributes to these gatherings each year. Their dedication ensures that the traditions of Founders Day continue to strengthen the bonds between graduates, families, and the Academy around the world.
