Plebe-Parent Weekend Breakfast Welcomes Cadet Families

Plebe-Parent Weekend Breakfast Welcomes Cadet Families

Nearly 700 parents attended the WPAOG Plebe-Parent Breakfast on March 8, one of the many activities during Plebe-Parent Weekend. For the 9th year, the event brought together families for food and camaraderie, as well as the opportunity to connect with WPAOG staff to learn about the many services and resources WPAOG provides to cadets and their families during their time at West Point and beyond. Patrick Ortland ’82, COO of WPAOG, spoke with families and emphasized the importance of keeping the Long Gray Line connected. We thank family members for all that they do to support their cadets and the mission of the Academy! Photos.

West Point Leadership, Ethics, Diversity and STEM Workshop

West Point Leadership, Ethics, Diversity and STEM Workshop

USMA is the preeminent leadership development institution in the world and its mission of developing the next generation of leaders doesn't start and finish at the gates of the academy. Through its office of Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Opportunity, West Point hosts Leadership, Ethics, Diversity and STEM workshops throughout the country to teach leadership, ethics and morality to students and educators in underserved areas. The office recently hosted its fourth annual LEADS event at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi. The daylong event brought together JROTC cadets from throughout the Jackson Public School System and surrounding areas to learn about what it means to be a leader. There were STEM demonstrations where students could try out virtual reality headsets and participate in small experiments. Read more.

West Point & WPAOG Thank You for Your Generous Support!

West Point & WPAOG Thank You for Your Generous Support!

WPAOG thanks all our donors who made 2018 such a resounding success! Because of you, we raised $45.8 million in cash receipts for the Academy and WPAOG. In addition, our alumni participation rate reached 35%, our highest level yet. This number is a critical indicator in determining a university’s annual national ranking and helps increase the prestige of the institution, while enhancing the development of future leaders. Watch our “Thank You” video to see highlights from the past year at West Point!

Army’s Incredible Alpine Ski Season

  Army’s Incredible Alpine Ski Season

The Army West Point Ski Team just returned from Nationals at Snow King in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where the men’s alpine team and Cadet Heather Graham ’22 (pictured) competed against some of the nation’s top collegiate skiers. Over five days they competed in giant slalom, slalom and dual slalom events on very aggressive courses, learning from the experience and hoping to come back even stronger next season. The team thanks all the parents and alumni who came out and supported the team during the season. Special thanks to Coach Bob McIntee, whose hard work and dedication made it possible for the team to compete at the national level for a second year in a row.

Cadet Zachary Potter ’20 had the chance to participate in a ceremony honoring the WWII service of his grandfather, Frank Coverstone. The ceremony was held March 15 at Coverstone’s Indiana home, and a host of family members and guests packed the veteran’s living room to show their thanks and appreciation. Potter said, “It means a whole lot to me to be able to follow the example he set and to continue the tradition of serving our country.” Full story.

The U.S. Army’s Rapid Equipping Force (REF) has partnered with USMA to provide equipment and training on unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and counter unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) in support of a bi-annual Army-Navy competition sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. In December 2018, West Point competed with the U.S. Naval Academy in a three-day, force-on-force exercise using weapon simulators to capture the opponent’s flag. The goal of this research project is to develop squad-level tactics that are augmented with unmanned ground and aerial systems. Read more.

There were no classes at USMA on Monday February 25. Nor were there athletic events, student group meetings or any other extracurricular activities for the Corps of Cadets. Instead, the entire corps as well as West Point’s military and civilian staff, faculty and coaches spent the entire day participating in a stand-down to begin the process of changing the academy’s culture as it relates to sexual assault and harassment. Full story.
