EXCEL Scholars Program Dinner Celebrates Scholarship Recipients

EXCEL Scholars Program Dinner Celebrates Scholarship Recipients

Earlier this spring, the EXCEL Scholars Program celebrated another tremendously successful year with a banquet at Herbert Hall. 2LT Simone Askew ’18, a Rhodes Scholar, introduced Dr. Leslie Fenwick (pictured with Fulbright Scholarship winner Jack Lowe ’19). Fenwick, Dean Emerita of the Howard University School of Education, gave an inspiring speech to cadets, faculty, and guests in attendance at the event. The EXCEL Scholars Program is a Dean’s initiative to promote the personal and professional excellence of high performing cadets from underrepresented groups. This year, the EXCEL Scholars Program graduated five scholarship winners (Marshall, Fulbright, Knight-Hennessy, GEM x 2), and one medical school candidate. Thanks to donor support of the Margin of Excellence and the Diversity & Inclusion Endowment, the EXCEL Scholars Program is possible.

CLDT Graduation

  CLDT Graduation

Congratulations to the cadets who graduated from Cadet Leader Development Training (CLDT) on June 15 at Camp Buckner. COL(R) Rolf Knoll, USMA ’70 was the guest speaker for the ceremony. “During CLDT, I gained a better understanding of platoon level tactics that we hadn't experienced in the classroom,” said CDT Garrett Sytsma ’21, the CLDT Honor Graduate. “We also learned how to establish standard operating procedures, and how to conduct rehearsals to make sure we are prepared to accomplish the mission.” CLDT is a three-week field problem which puts the cadets in leadership positions and forces them to solve tactical problems under stressful conditions. Last week cadets learned the effects of synchronized and coordinated surface to surface and air to ground fires during a Combined Arms Live Fire Exercise (CALFEX) as part of their familiarization on their roles as lieutenants within Combined Arms Maneuver. Cadets and some soldiers are also participating in Air Assault Training at West Point. During Air Assault training, cadets master the basics of rapelling from a helicopter and slingload operations. In honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, Cadet Leah Foodman ’20, shared her experience about her trip with the West Point Department of History to Normandy earlier this year. “This past March, I had the opportunity to travel to Normandy, France, with the USMA Department of History. The trip coincided with the 75th anniversary of the Allied Invasion in Europe. Standing on the hallowed grounds of Normandy provided me with a new perspective of what I had only previously learned in the classroom.” Read more.
