  2018-19 WPAOG Parent Handbook Available

The WPAOG Parent Handbook provides everything you need to know about being a member of the West Point community and participating in your cadet’s 47-month experience. A tool to help families meet the unique challenges of having a son or daughter attend West Point, the guide includes valuable information about visiting West Point, resources available to families, WPAOG support and services, connecting with other families through the WPAOG website’s Parent Portal, how to become involved with Parents Clubs, and special events. Thanks to your generous donations to funds like the West Point Parents Fund, the Parent Handbook is complimentary to all families. Hard copies of the 2018-19 Parent Handbook are being mailed now to all parents and the booklet is available to download from the Parent Portal. If you have any questions or have not received your booklet by the end of July, please contact Shelisa Baskerville at 845.446.1535 or parentrelations@wpaog.org.

Did You Know?

  West Point magazine Summer 2018

Did you know that West Point has courses in game theory, photogrammetry, and cryptology? That West Point is getting a new statue? The Summer 2018 issue of West Point is full of the many unique stories, systems, and services at WPAOG and the Academy. The latest issue also features a cover story on Cyber defense and how West Point and its graduates are pioneering the way in preparing Army leaders for the Cyber domain. This includes the Army Cyber Institute at West Point (ACI), as well as the cadet-focused Cyber Research Center.

West Point Band Honors Fathers

  West Point Band Honors Fathers

In 2017, to celebrate Father’s Day, the West Point Band released a cover of the Zac Brown Band’s song “My Old Man” with COL Doug McInvale ‘93 of the Math Department singing lead vocals. The music video became a viral sensation that resonated with cadets, military families, soldiers, and dads everywhere. This year, it was released again and in an interview with the Center for Oral History we learned about how this song touched MAJ Paul Lushenko ’05 who was deployed to Afghanistan. This great story was covered on Fox & Friends on Father’s Day.

Class of 2018 With Strength We Lead Graduates

On the eve of the 220th West Point graduation, Army West Point Athletics released a farewell video to send off the Class of 2018, leveraging powerful remarks delivered by Coach Mike Krzyzewski ’69 at a recent awards ceremony. On May 26, 972 graduates received their diplomas at Michie Stadium, completing their challenging 47-month experience at West Point. The Class of 2018 included 12 combat veterans, 10 honor graduates, and 11 international cadets. Gen. Joseph Dunford Jr., 19th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was the speaker and he focused on the changing environment of the character of war and the importance of anticipating and adapting to those changes. A delegation from the Class of 1968, the 50-year affiliate class, presented a set of second lieutenant bars engraved “68-18” to each graduate as they officially joined the Long Gray Line. Full story. This summer, you can follow Department of History staff rides around the globe and see great images and read about what your cadets are learning. During the Cold War Staff ride, CDT Brian Brooks ’20 wrote about lessons learned at the Lennon Wall and Charles Bridge in Prague. Visit the History Department Facebook page to find daily reports from this and other current staff rides including: Modern Japan, WWI, and Civil Rights. Staff ride enrichment experiences for cadets are supported by generous Margin of Excellence donations through WPAOG.

Cadet Summer Training is Underway

While it’s a break from the classroom, Cadet Summer Training means military training. The Class of 2022 will enter on July 2 for six weeks of Cadet Basic Training. Meanwhile the upperclass are conducting Cadet Field Training, Cadet Leader Development Training, and a number of military courses such as Air Assault and Airborne School. All of the military training supports The Army Vision. Be sure to follow USMA and WPAOG social media for additional coverage throughout the summer.

  Anderson Athletic Center Groundbreaking

On June 8, leaders from WPAOG, in partnership with Army West Point Athletics, joined USMA Superintendent LTG Robert L. Caslen, Jr. ’75 to mark the official groundbreaking for the Anderson Athletic Center, the 40th brick and mortar projected to be delivered to the Academy by WPAOG. The renovation of the building will now create a multi-purpose athletic facility to enhance the cadet-athlete experience across multiple sports. The project has been jumpstarted with a leadership gift from Lee and Penny Anderson ’61 and has also received support from John Drew ’78, William and Diane Spurgeon ’81 and the Class of 1981, and William J. Sandbrook ’79. Full storyPhotos.
