West Point Parents Club Fund Check Presentation
 

During the Army vs North Texas football game on Oct. 22, Kim Vander Yacht P’17, Dan Wilsford P’18, Mark Nunn P’19 and Wendy Warns P’20 represented West Point Parents in presenting a check for $2,400,000 to Todd Browne ’85, President and CEO of the West Point Association of Graduates, and LTG Robert Caslen Jr. ’75, 59th Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy. This outstanding gift from the West Point Parents Fund will support Margin of Excellence programs which allow all cadets to reach their highest potential. Additionally, the West Point Parents Club of Greater Houston presented a check for $2,000 to WPAOG to support Cadet Activities. Thank you to all our parents and families for their tremendous support!

Former FBI Director Mueller Receives Thayer Award

  Robert Mueller Receives Thayer Award
   

On Oct. 6, Robert S. Mueller III, sixth Director of the FBI, received the 2016 Sylvanus Thayer Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a non-graduate by the West Point Association of Graduates. Mueller, who was sworn in as FBI Director one week before the terrorist attacks of 9/11, led the FBI during one of the most critical periods in U.S. history, transforming the Bureau from a traditional law enforcement agency into a threat-driven, intelligence-led national security organization. During the day, Mueller met with small groups of cadets and was honored with a parade. At dinner in the Mess Hall, Mueller addressed the Corps, sharing leadership lessons from his career in public service that has spanned nearly five decades. Chaney ’01 Receives 2016 Nininger Award

On Sept. 22, WPAOG presented the 2016 Nininger Award for Valor at Arms to MAJ Matthew A. Chaney ’01.  A recipient of the Silver Star for “bravery in the face of the enemy, skill at arms, and aggressive assault of prepared enemy defenses” while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom on September 10, 2007, Chaney told the Corps of Cadets assembled in the Mess Hall how his experience in Iraq related to what they were learning at West Point. I decided West Point,” West Point’s newest public service announcement video, depicts what cadets expect of their Academy experience. It depicts some of the challenges cadets face, their motivations, and their quest for excellence. The video, designed to appeal to potential candidates, will air primarily during athletic event broadcasts.

West Point Cadets Take Part in 2016 Tunnel to Towers Run

  West Point Tunnel to Towers Run
   

Over 2,000 West Point cadets joined 30,000 runners in the 2016 Tunnel to Towers Run on September 25 in New York City. The run is held in honor of New York firefighter Stephen Siller, who died on 9/11 when the towers collapsed after he had made his way from his Brooklyn firehouse through the Hugh Carey Tunnel (formerly the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel), to the World Trade Center. WPAOG Wins CASE Fundraising Excellence Awards for 4th Year in a Row

 
   

For the fourth consecutive year, WPAOG has won two educational fundraising awards for excellence from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE): Overall Performance and Sustained Excellence in Fundraising. CASE is one of the world's largest nonprofit educational associations, and includes more than 3,670 colleges and universities, primary and secondary independent and international schools, and nonprofit organizations in more than 82 countries around the globe. In addition, WPAOG has earned the highest ratings from both Charity Navigator (4 stars) and Guidestar (Gold), the two largest worldwide independent evaluators of charities and nonprofit institutions.

C&ME Department Innovation Supports U.S. Army

Check out this video update on some innovative U.S. Army technology developed by West Point Civil & Mechanical Engineering faculty and cadets! We first introduced the story of SIP-Huts in the Summer 2014 issue of West Point magazine. COL Daisie Boettner ’81, C&ME Department Head, says that the original idea has “blossomed into a multi-year cadet research project that is a game-changer for the Army.”

The Fall 2016 issue of West Point magazine is out of this world! From Cold War era missions to working in today’s international teams aboard the ISS, USMA graduate astronauts’ training has prepared them to succeed. Three West Point grads-Kopra ’85, Williams ’80, and Kimbrough ’89-will command the ISS during 2016.  Read more about West Point and America’s Space Program. USMA Glee Club at Premier of Smithsonian Tuskegee Airmen Exhibit

On September 23, the West Point Glee Club performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC for a ceremony opening the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture. In the audience that evening were the President and First Lady, Chief Justice John Roberts, GEN (R) Colin Powell, and “countless other titans of culture and the arts.” Tom Hanks narrated the portion in which the Glee Club sang “America the Beautiful” to honor the Tuskegee Airmen. Cadets represented the Academy, interacting with surviving airmen, GEN (R) Powell, Hanks, and other artists, as well as giving a TV interview. ABC will broadcast “Taking the Stage: African American Music and Stories That Changed America” nationwide in February 2017.

Writer & Producer Brady ’96 Visits English Class, Creative Writing Forum

  T.J. Brady ’96 Writer and Producer Visits Cadets
   

T.J. Brady ’96, who has written for TV series such as “Narcos” and “Army Wives,” visited the Department of English & Philosophy’s EN367 Drama class to discuss his play “LP/OP,” which cadets read as part of the course. He then gave a talk to cadets from the Creative Writing Forum and Film Forum entitled “Writing for Television.” The discussion explored how creativity and expression are connected to professional success both in and out of the Army. Cadet Marathon Team Excels in Army Ten Miler

  West Point Marathon Team Competes at 10 Miler in DC
   

USMA’s Marathon Team performed well in the 2016 Army Ten Miler in Washington, DC. Nine out of 16 runners broke 60 minutes, and the team took first place in the Military Academy & ROTC Division for the second year in a row.
