Parent Review - March 2016

This Week is West Point Founders Day!

On March 16, 1802, President Thomas Jefferson signed the document that founded the United States Military Academy. It read, “the said corps, when so organized, shall be stationed at West Point in the state of New York and shall constitute a military academy.” This spring, West Point Societies around the world are celebrating USMA’s 214th anniversary at traditional Founders Day events. Happy Founders Day!

Robert S. Mueller III to Receive 2016 Thayer Award

Mueller’s career of service to the nation spans nearly five decades, beginning with military service as a Marine officer in Vietnam.  He was the sixth director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, sworn in on September 4, 2001, just one week before the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Since 1958, WPAOG has presented the Sylvanus Thayer Award to an outstanding citizen of the United States whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify personal devotion to the ideals expressed in the West Point motto, “Duty, Honor, Country.” The award will be presented at West Point on October 6. "Ring Melt" Video Shows Impact of Class Ring Memorial Program on Class of 2017 Cadets

Cadets at West Point were the first American students to wear class rings, starting the tradition in 1835. Each year since 2001, gold from donated class rings worn by past West Point graduates has been melted and mixed into the gold for the rings of the Academy’s next graduating class through the Class Ring Memorial Program. LTC (R) Ron Turner ’58 developed the idea for the “Ring Melt” in 1999, believing such an endeavor would provide a tangible link between members of the Long Gray Line. In late February, as the making of next year’s class rings got underway, Class of 2017 officers participated in the 16th Annual West Point Class Ring Memorial Melt. To date, 410 West Point class rings have been donated to the program. WPAOG's Class of 2017 Ring Melt video shows how much this program means, both to the families donating rings and to the cadets who attend. View photos. Firstie parents can also view last year’s Class of 2016 Ring Melt video.

The West Point Cadet Competitive Cyber Team won 35 medals -- 15 gold, 12 silver and eight bronze—finishing first among service academies in the third annual CyberStakes Hacking Competition, hosted by the Department of Defense. Participants competed in a range of events that included reverse engineering, cyber forensics, cryptography, discovering and exploiting vulnerabilities in executable programs, and lock picking -- a physical counterpart to cyber vulnerability analysis that is traditional at cyber competitions.
