President’s Message:

Fellow Society Members:

I know most people only read the first few sentences of an email. So let me ask you up front to please read through this or save it to read later.  I will try to keep future messages brief, and use a variety of mediums in addition to email (such as our LinkedIn group and our website) to keep you informed.

I want to thank Rich Stroiney again for his leadership over the past few years in challenging circumstances. I appreciate his service to the Society and his on-going support.

The purpose of our Society is to support the Academy’s aims, ideals, standards and achievements, by creating opportunities here in Connecticut for graduates, widows and widowers of graduates, and other friends of West Point to gather together in support of these common goals.

There are many, many opportunities available to meet the needs and interests of our very diverse group.  Our records show that our oldest grad in CT is from the Class of ’41, and our youngest grad is one of the 20 graduates of the Class of ’13.   We have over 568 graduates currently living in Connecticut. There is a lot we can do, without asking anyone to do too much!

Let me share some of the opportunities that you can participate in:

  • Write up a recommendation for the 2014 Thayer Award
  • Write up a recommendation for the 2014 Distinguished Graduate Award
  • Support Academy Admissions efforts
  • Support Parent Club activities and efforts
  • Attend and support Cadet Activities, Clubs and Sports events in Connecticut  (Mark your calendars now for Army football at Yale on Sept 27th, 2014, vs. UCONN at Yankee Stadium on Nov 8th, 2014)
  • Support Graduate networking efforts for business and career opportunities
  • Support our Society communication efforts across multiple platforms
  • Participate in tailgate parties at West Point home games (Hope to see you at the NY Society tailgate for the Army Navy Sprint game tomorrow (Oct 26th)!
  • Participate in a Golf outing (or two) and a Golf challenge against the other (semi-military) Academies
  • Participate in family picnics, meet-ups or outings for different family get-together’s
  • Organize a birthday party for our oldest grad
  • Support all Veterans, especially our wounded Veterans
  • Support Community outreach programs to increase exposure of the Academy to underserved populations, help demystify the military and inspire service to our Nation
  • Support Army Navy events – trips to Philadelphia and game watching parties
  • Support Benny Haven’s meet ups to relax and reconnect
  • Support our annual Founder’s day dinner

We will be sending out an online Survey soon asking for your feedback in an organized manner and I will share those results with you, however, please reach out to me by email or phone and I welcome your ideas and comments.

We all have varied interests, networks and connections.  I believe we can fully support the Academy and our Society’s purpose if we all find something on that list we would like to participate in, and then start connecting with others.  This doesn’t have to be hard, or expensive, complicated, or take too much time – it is just old grads being old grads, enjoying each other’s company as we continue to serve our Nation, our communities and our families to the best of our ability.

What is most urgent now is your nomination for the Thayer Award and Distinguished Graduate for 2014.  These are due at West Point no later than November 1st, 2013 – next week!  Sorry for the late notice.  Here are the details for criteria and format:

Distinguished Graduate Award:  Please send to me via email your nominations for a Distinguished Graduate asap.  Each Society can only make 2 nominations for this award.

 The Distinguished Graduate Award criteria:

The award is to be given to graduates of the United States Military Academy whose character, distinguished service, and stature draw wholesome comparison to the qualities that West Point strives for in keeping with its motto:  “Duty, Honor, Country.”  With the purpose of identifying to the public and the Corps of Cadets the broad national significance of West Point as one of America’s cherished institutions, candidates for the Distinguished Graduate Award will be graduates of the United States Military Academy who have demonstrated a strong interest in supporting West Point throughout their lifetime.  The Award will not be given to individuals who occupy, or are candidates for, elective office, or who are still on active duty.

The Thayer Award:  These nominations can be made by any regular member of the Association and there is no restriction on the number of nominations that can be made.  These can be submitted directly to the Association of Graduates.

The Thayer Award criteria:

The Thayer Award is to be given to a citizen of the United States, other than a West Point graduate, whose outstanding character, accomplishments and stature in the civilian community draw wholesome comparison to the qualities for which West Point strives, in keeping with its motto - “Duty, Honor, Country.”  The individual selected for the Thayer Award must agree to accept the Award at West Point.

Nominating letter Format:

After identifying the nominee and the award for which he or she is nominated, the letter shall continue with a narrative of the nominee’s life and accomplishments that makes clear to the reader the way in which these “draw wholesome comparison to the qualities for which West Point strives, in keeping with its motto – Duty, Honor, Country.”  The letter shall be no longer than three typed pages.

In conclusion, this is our Society and we can make it a fun and enjoyable part of each of our busy lives.  All it takes is a little time and effort to get involved in things that you are already interested in, and leverage the connections and resources of the Society to support our goals and the Academy's.

I look forward to getting to know you in the months ahead, and again appreciate your feedback and recommendations.  My preferred email is: wscottanders@gmail.com.  I live in Newtown, CT.  Our society website is:  http://www.westpointaog.org/WPSofConnecticut.  Our LinkedIn group is “West Point Society of Connecticut”
