GEN(R) Ann Dunwoody Receives 2019 Thayer Award

GEN(R) Ann Dunwoody Receives 2019 Thayer Award

“Receiving the Thayer Award makes me feel closer to West Point than I’ve ever felt before,” said General Ann Dunwoody (Retired), in an interview just prior to receiving the 62nd annual Sylvanus Thayer Award. A remarkable statement given that Dunwoody, the first woman in U.S. military history to achieve the rank of four-star general, comes from a four-generation legacy of West Point graduates: her father (Harold H. Dunwoody ’43June), her grandfather (Halsey Dunwoody 1905), her great-grandfather (Henry Harrison Chase Dunwoody 1866, and her brother, Harold “Buck” Dunwoody Jr. ’70). Full storyPhotos. USMA 2004 Grads & Special Guest Honor Fallen Classmates

USMA 2004 Grads & Special Guest Honor Fallen Classmates

At their 15-year reunion, USMA 2004 held a unique memorial service in Cullum Hall Memorial Room, not in a chapel. A special guest was announced just before he took a seat at the grand piano in the room. Elham Fanous, a 22-year old pianist from Afghanistan, played a tribute song specially written for the graduates and their fallen classmates. “They died guarding us to make sure that we are safe and can become what we love. I appreciate that so much. Being here is very meaningful for me, and my letter was written to convey the feelings I feel and the fact that although they suffered and died in my country, I want to share how grateful I am for their service,” Fanous said. Read more.

Nattiel ’17 Delivers Keynote During Inspire Dinner

USMA 2009 and 1999 Present Reunion Gifts

The Minority Visitation Program (MVP) plays a critical role in attracting and matriculating top high school talent to the United States Military Academy. The program allows highly qualified candidates and an accompanying parent/guardian the opportunity to travel to West Point in order to see the Academy and experience cadet life. In September, the Directorate of Admissions hosted 30 of our nation’s most competitive candidates from 22 states across the country. First Lieutenant Christian Nattiel ‘17, Rhodes Scholar, delivered keynote remarks during the Inspire Dinner, the culminating event of the weekend. Thanks to donor support of the Margin of Excellence and the Diversity & Inclusion Endowment, this important program is possible. Photos.
