All Academy Challenge: USMA Beats Navy, Achieves Record Participation

All Academy Challenge: USMA Beats Navy, Achieves Record Participation

During the five-day 2019 All Academy Challenge from May 30-June 3, the West Point community came together in record numbers to strengthen the Margin of Excellence: 9,680 alumni, including 377 first time donors to West Point, donated gifts totaling $1.5 million. For the sixth time, West Point competed against Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and the Merchant Marine Academy to see who could get the highest alumni participation rate. It was a close race with Merchant Marine and we narrowly came in second. This year 19.3% of the Long Gray Line supported the Challenge, which will have a profound impact on the entire Corps of Cadets and further the mission of West Point.

In honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, Cadet Leah Foodman ’20, shared her experience about her trip with the West Point Department of History to Normandy earlier this year. “This past March, I had the opportunity to travel to Normandy, France, with the USMA Department of History. The trip coincided with the 75th anniversary of the Allied Invasion in Europe. Standing on the hallowed grounds of Normandy provided me with a new perspective of what I had only previously learned in the classroom.” Read more.

The Summer of ’23!

  The Summer of ’23!

June 11, 1923 was the first official “Alumni Day” ceremony at West Point and included a wreath-laying ceremony at the Sylvanus Thayer statue, which had been dedicated on the same day in 1883. To this day, the tradition remains. Each year, graduates continue to come together at reunions and mini-reunions, strengthening those bonds of the Long Gray Line. Celebrate the First Alumni Day with our June sticker, and continue the celebration for years to come! Purchase stickers individually, or as a pack of twelve in store or online at WPAOGGiftShop.com. Our once-monthly, limited edition stickers commemorating WPAOG on our 150th Anniversary are a great way to celebrate the year with us!

Public Service Announcement

WPAOG has received reports that internet scammers are contacting USMA alumni on Facebook Messenger, posing as other alumni. We advise you to be cautious about responding to such contacts unless you are confident you know who is messaging you and you have a way of confirming their identity outside of Facebook before disclosing any information to them.

EXCEL Scholars Program Dinner Celebrates Scholarship Recipients

EXCEL Scholars Program Dinner Celebrates Scholarship Recipients

Earlier this spring, the EXCEL Scholars Program celebrated another tremendously successful year with a banquet at Herbert Hall. 2LT Simone Askew ’18, a Rhodes Scholar, introduced Dr. Leslie Fenwick (pictured with Fulbright Scholarship winner Jack Lowe ’19). Fenwick, Dean Emerita of the Howard University School of Education, gave an inspiring speech to cadets, faculty, and guests in attendance at the event. The EXCEL Scholars Program is a Dean’s initiative to promote the personal and professional excellence of high performing cadets from underrepresented groups. This year, the EXCEL Scholars Program graduated five scholarship winners (Marshall, Fulbright, Knight-Hennessy, GEM x 2), and one medical school candidate. Thanks to donor support of the Margin of Excellence and the Diversity & Inclusion Endowment, the EXCEL Scholars Program is possible.
