Morgan ’98 Arrives at ISS on 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11

Celebrate! WPAOG’s 150th Anniversary Video & Virtual Toast

Fifty years to the day after Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin ’51 stepped onto the Moon in a giant leap for humanity (while Michael Collins ‘52 remained in lunar orbit in the Command Module), NASA astronaut Andrew Morgan ’98 and two fellow Expedition 60 crew members arrived July 20 for their mission aboard the International Space Station. In photos sent exclusively to WPAOG, Morgan is seen in quarantine (with #FlatCullum) prior to launch with fellow USMA Astronauts Frank Rubio ‘98, Shane Kimbrough ‘89 and Pat Forrester ‘79 (now Chief of the Astronaut Office) as well as fellow West Point parachute team members Robb Gosling ‘99 and Michael Nordeen ‘98. Other West Point grads attending the launch in Baikonur, Kazakhstan included COL Ramey Wilson ’94 and BG Garrick M. Harmon ’92, Defense Attache-Moscow. "That’s a lot of grads here—Grip Hands—the bond is strong! Go Army!" Morgan said in a July 19 email to WPAOG. The Expedition 60 crew will spend more than six months conducting science investigations in fields such as biology, Earth science, human research, physical sciences, and technology development.

Esper ’86 Confirmed as Secretary of Defense

The Senate confirmed Mark T. Esper ’86 as Secretary of Defense by a 90-8 vote on July 23, ending the longest period to date that the Pentagon has been without a permanent leader. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, called Mr. Esper a “well-prepared nominee” who will face a world “full of serious threats to America, to our allies and to our interests.” Read more.
