Exciting Army Win in Armed Forces Bowl

  Army Wins Armed Forces Bowl 2017
   

In what has become typical of Army West Point Football games, the Black Knights persevered in thrilling fashion to win the 2017 Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, 42-35, over San Diego State December 23 in Fort Worth, TX. In a contest that featured four tie scores and four lead changes, a gutsy two-point conversion call by Army head coach Jeff Monken determined the outcome. Full story.

On December 22, 26 cadets became the newest members of the Long Gray Line after receiving their diplomas from BG Cindy Jebb '82, Dean of the Academic Board. Cadets also received 2LT bars engraved with “67-17” from members of their 50-year affiliation class, the Class of 1967. Representing the Class of 1967 were COL (R) Dave Blanchard, LTC (R) Bob Stromberg, and Mr. Bill Koch. Congratulations to our newest Old Grads! List of Graduates and photos.

New WPAOG RBHH Program Wins Two CASE Gold Awards

In 2017, WPAOG launched the Rockbound Highland Home Program (RBHH) to assist graduates with navigating post security procedures, offer special access to select MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) facilities and services, and provide “insider” tours for graduates and their guests. Recently, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) held its District II Accolades Awards Program, recognizing outstanding work in the area of advancement, for more than 700 organizations. The Rockbound Highland Home Program received two Gold Awards, one each in the areas of “Alumni Relations” and “Alumni Relations Events & Affinity Programs.”

On a day filled with ceremonial precision, Mark Esper ’86, PhD—a former paratrooper, infantry officer and combat veteran—became the 23rd Secretary of the Army. After a brief swearing-in ceremony at the Pentagon, senior military leaders, congressional officials and soldiers welcomed Esper into his new post with a formal arrival ceremony at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, VA. Hill ’78 Conceives We the Unknown, Honoring Unknown Soldiers

We, The Unknown is a new musical commission conceived by LTC(R) Rob Hill ’78, a third-generation soldier whose paternal grandfather, BG(R) John G. Hill, Sr. ’24, served in WWI. The idea for the choral musical work came to Hill after hearing a brief history of how America’s Unknown Soldier was selected. The work is slated to premiere in Kansas City, MO on June 9 & 10 to commemorate the centennial of the U.S. involvement in WWI. Read more.

Toth ’18 Accepts Invite to Reese's Senior Bowl

Army West Point offensive tackle Brett Toth has accepted an invitation to play in the Reese's Senior Bowl on January 27. Toth was one of eight new additions to the roster for the game, which is played in Mobile, AL and features some of the most talented seniors who just completed their final season of college football. The game is set for 1:30pm CT kickoff on the NFL Network. The Charleston, SC native is the first player from USMA to participate in the Senior Bowl in the 67-year history of the event. Full story.

Class Notes are online for you to read as often as you’d like, at your convenience. This gives you the opportunity to catch up with what your classmates and fellow graduates are doing, no subscription required! Make it a resolution in 2018 to send an update to your Class Scribe/Historian. (There is an email link on each class page to make it easy to send a submission.) We post an item in Grad News each Friday to list which classes have posted updates.

The deadline to have your Herbert Hall Brick or Paver donation installed for spring 2018 is March 1. They will be installed the week before graduation so be sure to check them out if you are here visiting this summer. The fall installation deadline is July 1 and will take place just prior to the beginning of the fall reunion season. What a great way to leave your mark on West Point!
