McClain ’02 Completes Second Spacewalk on ISS Expedition 59

McClain ’02 Completes Second Spacewalk on ISS Expedition 59

On April 8, LTC Anne McClain ’02 completed her second spacewalk on International Space Station Expedition 59. The spacewalk with fellow Flight Engineer David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency lasted six and a half hours. During the first spacewalk of the series, on March 22, McClain became the 13th woman to perform a spacewalk. McClain was scheduled with Christina Koch for the first-ever all-female spacewalk on March 29 but did not participate, due in part to spacesuit availability on the station. This became the subject of a Saturday Night Live skit, which McClain and her colleagues saw as “hilarious.”

Three USMA Grads Selected as Olmsted Scholars

Four USMA Grads Selected as Olmsted Scholars

Congratulations to the three USMA graduates named to the Olmsted Scholar Class of 2020. CPT Richard Stucky ’11 will study in Lyon, France; CPT James Whitler ’11 will study in Munich, Germany; and CPT Frederick Wolf ’11 will study in Mexico City, Mexico. Since 1959, the Olmsted Scholar Program has challenged young military officers to learn a foreign language and pursue graduate studies in that language at a foreign university. This cultural immersion program, sponsored by a foundation established by MG George H. Olmsted, Class of 1922, is designed so that scholars return to their service “with a higher degree of confidence and a broader perspective.”

Spring 2019 issue of West Point is Headed Your Way

The print edition is in the mail now, but if you want a sneak peek you can view the digital edition online. The cover story highlights how WPAOG made a great tradition even better by bringing our annual Class Ring Memorial Program home to West Point for the first time in its 19-year history. And as we continue to celebrate WPAOG’s 150th Anniversary, you will learn how we went from Association of Graduates to Alumni Foundation in “The Second Stage of AOG History.” One thing you won’t find in the digital version, though, is a Flat Cullum for you to include in all your Old Grad Adventures this year. You'll find him on page 13 of your copy.

5/30-6/3 Mark Your Calendar for the All Academy Challenge

The sixth annual All Academy Challenge is quickly approaching! Help West Point win by making a gift between May 30 and June 3. USMA will once again compete against Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine for the highest alumni giving participation rate. No matter the size of your gift or where you choose to designate it, your participation counts! A critical indicator in determining a university’s annual national ranking, the alumni participation rate helps increase the prestige of the institution while enhancing the development of future leaders. Your gift will also support Margin of Excellence programs at West Point that are vitally important to the Corps of Cadets. Go Army!
