U.S. News Ranks West Point as H.S. Guidance Counselors' Top Pick


The 2017 edition of U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges rankings, released Sept. 13, place the U.S. Military Academy No. 1 on High School Counselors’ Top Picks list for National Liberal Arts Colleges and No. 2 in Top Public Colleges. In the Best Engineering Programs category, West Point ranks No. 4 overall at engineering schools whose highest degree is a bachelor's or master's, and also ranks No. 4 for civil engineering in the Best in the Specialties category. USMA's mechanical engineering program ranks No. 7 at schools where no doctorate is offered. Read more.

Construction Begins on New Malek West Point Visitors Center


On September 9, after 15 years of planning, designing, and fundraising, ground was broken on the new 31,000-square-foot Malek West Point Visitors Center, located next to the West Point Museum. Envisioned as a 21st century “experience hub,” this new gateway to West Point will feature high-tech and interactive exhibits, state-of-the-art theaters, and modern architectural innovations that highlight the U.S. Military Academy as the world’s premier leader development institution. The Visitors Center is named after its lead donor, Fred Malek ’59, a 2014 Distinguished Graduate. Eight USMA Classes —1972, 1973, 1974, 1978, 1984, 1988, 1990, and 2004 — and other donors also supported the project. Full story and photos.

Branch Week at USMA Educates Cadets on Career Choices


During Branch Week, cadets have the opportunity to meet with representatives from each of the U.S. Army branches to help them make informed decisions during the branch selection process. From Thayer Walk to Quarters 100, static displays were set up to give cadets hands-on experience with vehicles, equipment and machinery related to each branch. Read more. View photos.

West Point Glee Club, Band Perform At Trinity Church for 9/11 First Responders


A WPIX-TV news video highlighted the West Point Glee Club and the West Point Band performance at Trinity Church on the 15th anniversary of 9/11. The church welcomed everyone for the free concert, “just like it opened its Saint Paul's chapel for first responders and those needing comfort on September 11th and in the darks days and months that followed.”

Collins ’92 Taking All-Army Obstacle Course Team to World Championships


COL Liam Collins ’92, Director of West Point’s Modern War Institute, also coaches the All-Army Obstacle Course Racing Team. These elite racers recently competed at the Spartan Beast and Sprint races in Breckenridge, CO and Collins was pleased with the team’s performance. One member, who took second place both days, will be the defending champion at the Spartan Beast World Championships next month, and West Point may soon host its own Spartan obstacle course race.

West Point Remembers Buffalo Soldiers at Annual Ceremony

Family members of Sanders Matthews, one of the last Buffalo Soldiers, and the last to serve and work at West Point, were among attendees at the 55th annual Buffalo Soldiers Memorial Wreath Laying ceremony September 2. Superintendent and keynote speaker LTG Robert Caslen ’75 addressed how the Buffalo Soldiers led the way for many African-Americans in service. Guest speaker MG(R) Fred A. Gorden ’62 spoke about a project that was a favorite of Matthews and unveiled an artistic rendition of what will become a Bronze statue of a Buffalo Soldier on horseback. The statue will sit on top of the memorial rock the plaque is attached to now. Full Story.

Meet Paladin, Army’s Newest Mule Mascot


Army West Point presented Paladin, the newest Army Mule mascot, at the first home football game. Paladin joined Ranger III and Stryker between the first and second quarters in an “A-Day” of his own, taking his place in the long line of Army mascots. Paladin’s “R-Day” was March 31 and you can learn more about him in the Fall issue of West Point magazine.
