LTC Myer ’01 Receives 2018 Nininger Award

2018 West Point Nininger Award Recipient LTC Myer '01

WPAOG presented the 13th Annual Nininger Award for Valor at Arms to LTC Matthew Myer ’01 on September 27. As a captain, Myer commanded “Chosen Company,” 2nd Battalion (Airborne) 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade during the July 13, 2008 Battle of Wanat, one of the bloodiest Taliban attacks in the U.S. War in Afghanistan. Chosen Company, led by Myer, exacted at least 50 enemy KIA during the more than four-hour battle against a numerically superior force, and, according to the narration accompanying the Silver Star he received for this battle, “Captain Myer’s fearless leadership and steady hand ensured that when the smoked cleared and fighting ended, the Chosen Few owned the ground that the enemy sought to take.” The Nininger Award was established in 2006 through an endowment created by Doug Kenna ’45 and his wife Jean, and is given each year to a recent graduate who has been decorated for valor. The recipient is selected to represent all young graduates leading American Soldiers in combat. Full story. Photos.

Inspire Dinner Welcomes Top Applicants to West Point

West Point Minority Visitation Program with LTG Nadja West '82

The Minority Visitation Program (MVP) is just one element in USMA’s strategy to promote diversity, a top priority for the Academy. MVP provides highly qualified students, accompanied by a parent/guardian, the opportunity to visit West Point and spend time with cadets and faculty to offer a compelling look into the high level academic and military education offered at West Point. The Admissions Office’s Inspire Dinner, a culminating event for USMA’s most competitive applicants, was recently held on Friday, September 28 at the Thayer Hotel. Key speakers like LTG Nadja West ’82 are invited to “inspire” attendees. MVP has proven successful at recruiting top candidates to the Academy. Of the candidates who participated in the program in the 2017-18 academic year, 67 are in the Class of 2022 and 25 are attending USMAPS. Donor support makes this valuable Margin of Excellence program possible and has significantly impacted USMA’s diversity recruiting efforts.
