Branch Night for USMA 2018

West Point Branch Night class of 2018

Congratulations to the members of USMA 2018 on receiving their branch assignments on November 15. Branch Night is the culmination of the Department of Military Instruction’s Branch Education and Mentorship Program (E&M). For the last 41 months, since they entered West Point as plebes, the members of the class have been learning about the duties and equipment associated with each of the Army’s 17 branches. West Point graduates from the 50-year Affiliation Class of 1968 were on hand to present the cadets with their “first brass” branch insignia pins. Full Story. View Photos.

Esper ’86 Confirmed as New Secretary of the Army

  Esper '86

Dr. Mark T. Esper '86 was confirmed by a vote in the Senate, 89-6, to become the 23rd Secretary of the Army on November 15. President Donald Trump nominated Esper in July. In testimony before the Senate on November 2, Esper laid out for lawmakers his priorities if confirmed as secretary. “If confirmed, my first priority will be readiness -- ensuring the total Army is prepared to fight across the full spectrum of conflict,” Esper said. “With the Army engaged in over 140 countries around the world, to include combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, training rotations to Europe to deter Russia, and forward deployed units in the Pacific defending against a bellicose North Korea, readiness must be our top priority.” Full story.

Monken Named Semifinalist for Munger Award

  Coach Monken

Army West Point Football head coach Jeff Monken was announced as a 2017 semifinalist for the George Munger Award by the Maxwell Football Club for national coach of the year. Ready All, Row—WPAOG Announces Campaign to Support Army Crew

  West Point Crew team

WPAOG and the Army Rowing Association are excited to announce a campaign to endow two full-time coaching positions for Army Crew. With volunteer coaches and a home in the privately-funded Caufield Crew and Sailing Center, the team has consistently improved since its founding in 1985. However, to achieve the next level of success and consistently win national championships and beat Navy Crew, the team needs professional guidance and training from full-time head coaches. To help achieve this goal, an anonymous donor has made a 1:1 matching gift challenge of $66,000 to kick-start the campaign. This means when friends, parents, and alumni of Army Crew give a combined total of $66,000 to the endowment, another $66,000 will be added, doubling the impact of every donor’s gift! Please give by December 31 so we can take full advantage of this generous matching gift offer.

Two Stories of Living Organ Donors

WPAOG recently shared two different stories of graduates who have saved others by living organ donation – specifically kidney donation. In one instance, the story demonstrated the “Bond of Brothers” between classmates Chris Connelly and Dave Ashley (1997). In the other, Ron Hudnell ’69 saved the life of a stranger, and converted him from a Navy fan to an Army fan!

Please consider joining us in celebrating this day of giving through a gift to West Point. Donations are essential to support Margin of Excellence programs for our cadets and keep the Long Gray Line strong. Iconic West Point History Poster Receives Updates

  West Point Poster

At West Point, “Much of the history we teach was made by the people we taught” has been the slogan of the Department of History for years. It acknowledges the important role Academy graduates have played in the history of the U.S, and the world, since 1802. This year begins a multi-year campaign to update the classic poster by releasing several new conflict-themed versions. This year focuses on WWII; future posters will be released covering World War I, Korea, Vietnam and other conflicts and events. Read more.
