Branch Night for USMA 2020

  Branch Night for USMA 2020

1,089 cadets in the Class of 2020 received their branch notifications during West Point’s annual Branch Night on November 13. Upon opening their envelopes, Firsties were each assigned one of the 17 Army branches and learned where their career in the U.S Army will begin. West Point graduates from the 50-year Affiliation Class of 1970 were on hand during the ceremony to present cadets with their “first brass” branch insignia pins. Nearly 90% of the Class received their first choice (96% received one of their top 3 choices), making it largely a night of joy and celebration. Full story. Photos.

Oldest Grad Receives Newest Class Ring

Oldest Grad Receives Newest Class Ring

Close to 100 friends, family and members of the West Point Society of Washington, DC gathered in Arlington, Virginia this past weekend to celebrate the 103rd birthday of West Point's oldest living graduate, Colonel (R) Raymond Renola, Class of 1940. In a special tribute at the party, BG (R) Kristin K. French '86 presented COL Renola with a replacement Class of 1940 West Point class ring. Ray had lost his ring years ago while swimming, and his family knew how much the ring meant to him. So, they tracked down the jeweler in Pennsylvania that had the mold for the class ring. As a surprise for his 103rd birthday, the family had a replacement made for Ray, and Kristin presented it to him. As an added surprise, the West Point Alumni Glee Club attended and sang "Happy Birthday," "On Brave Old Army Team," and the "Alma Mater." Full story.

West Point Society of Paris Fall Luncheon

West Point in the Fall

On October 26, the West Point Society of Paris hosted its annual Fall Luncheon in honor of the cadets studying in France on Fall Semester Abroad. The WPSP welcomed a total of 31 attendees, including nine cadets (five Firsties, four Cows) from three different campuses in France: Université Catholique de Lille, Université Catholique de Lyon, and École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr. International immersion programs like these are made possible by your support of the Margin of Excellence. In addition to the nine cadets in attendance, there were 13 graduates who traveled from both Europe and the U.S. The 13 graduates represented Classes from 1962 to 2009 and included two retired General Officers and the current Defense Attaché at the US Embassy in Paris. As part of the commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings, the luncheon tables were named in honor of major American battles from June 1944 in Normandy: Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, Sainte-Mère-Église, and Carentan.
