Service Academy SUPTs Speak at Harvard’s Kennedy School

Service Academy SUPT's Speak at Harvard

USMA Superintendent LTG Robert L. Caslen Jr. ’75 and the Superintendents of the Naval and Air Force Academies spoke at “The View from the Military Academies: A Conversation with the Superintendents About Values, Ethics, and the Military Profession,” on April 21 at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. The event had its roots in the 2016 Zengerle lecture given by Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust at West Point, where she explored the military notion of “friction” — that is, when a person is forced to confront a situation beyond his or her ability, and has to stretch and reach. Caslen and his peers explained that the American military must uphold U.S. values, which means following the rules of engagement, no matter what the situation. Full Harvard Gazette story.

Robert Frank '67 Receives Silver Star

On April 18, LTC(R) Robert Frank ’67 received a Silver Star for gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam while serving with F Troop, 9th Cavalry. Arkansas Congressman French Hill presented the award at Trapnall Hall in Little Rock, Arkansas. Frank and three of his crew members were recognized for the rescue of the crew of a downed C130 during the siege of An Loc on April 18, 1972. Frank said, “The Air Force crew kept pushing for an award and it finally came through, with the help of the former Chief of Staff of the Air Force. My copilot and I had been trying to get the crew chief and door gunner recognized for their decisive actions at the time. Neither of us would include us in the recognition; however, the former COS of the AF said in his endorsement letter that the crew chief and door gunner ‘did not walk to the crash site’.”
