The Corps Celebrates Founders Day

  The Corps Celebrates Founders Day

To introduce cadets to Founders Day, the Academy holds a Founders Day Dinner every year in the Mess Hall. This year’s celebration took place on March 1 and featured several activities to increase spirit throughout the night, already set in a spirited tone with spirit gear worn as the uniform. A trivia contest pitted class against class to put their knowledge of the Academy to the test. Keeping with tradition, the youngest and oldest graduates working at USMA shared remarks about their cadet experiences and how they have served them since. Full story.

Class of 2019 Ring Melt: The Legacy Continues

  Class of 2019 Ring Melt

The 18th Annual West Point Class Ring Memorial Melt took place on February 26, 2018. To date, 520 West Point class rings have been donated to the program, including the 69 rings that were donated this year for the Class of 2019 Ring Melt. Each year, gold from donated rings worn by past West Point graduates has been melted and mixed into the gold for the rings of the Academy’s next graduating class. LTC (R) Ron Turner ’58 developed the idea for the “Ring Melt” in 1999, believing such an endeavor would provide a tangible link between members of the Long Gray Line. Your support of the Long Gray Line Fund supports programs such as the Ring Melt, keeping you connected to West Point and the Corps of Cadets and perpetuating the events, the awards, the traditions. National Vietnam War Veterans Day

It was on March 29, 1973, when American combat and combat support units withdrew from South Vietnam. However, by the war’s end in 1975, more than three million American men and women would serve in Vietnam, including hundreds of members of the Long Gray Line. As a proud partner of the Vietnam War Commemoration, WPAOG would like to recognize that March 29 is National Vietnam War Veterans Day. In particular, we honor the members of the Long Gray Line who served our Nation during the conflict, especially the 334 who gave their lives. Plebe-Parent Breakfast

  Plebe-Parent Breakfast

A little snow did not stop more than 700 parents from attending the WPAOG Plebe-Parent Breakfast last Friday, part of the Plebe-Parent Weekend activities March 8-11. For the 8th year, the event brought together families for food and camaraderie, as well as the opportunity to connect with WPAOG staff to learn about the many services and resources WPAOG provides to cadets and their families during their time at West Point and beyond. Darwin Haines ’86, COO of WPAOG, emphasized the importance of keeping the Long Gray Line connected, noting “as parents, you understand the value of a strong network, and we hope you’ll help keep your kids connected to the Academy.” Plebe-Parent Breakfast is just the start of that journey, and we thank all family members for all that they do to support their cadets and the mission of the Academy. African Americans in Times of War

African Americans in Times of War

USMA hosted the annual Black History Month luncheon February 13 at the West Point Club. The theme for this year’s heritage month was “African Americans in Times of War.” H. Patrick Swygert, the event guest speaker, spoke about the experiences of African Americans, from fighting in the Civil War to fighting for civil rights – but not before pointing out an interesting coincidence. His remarks, titled “They Moved America,” described history with five individuals who formed teams to fight for equal rights. Children from West Point schools developed poster art for the luncheon. The posters featured a photo of a famous African American, like Martin Luther King Jr., with arms reaching out of their photos. Story.

Projects Day/Donor Tribute Day - Save the Date

Projects Day/Donor Tribute Day Save the Date

This year’s Donor Tribute Day will take place on May 3. This annual event is held in conjunction with the Academy’s Projects Day and is open to members of the Superintendent’s Circle, Chairman’s Circle, lifetime giving societies, and Cullum Society and to donors who gave $2,500 or more in the previous calendar year. During the course of the day, donors will have the opportunity to meet with cadets and faculty and see the impact of their philanthropy at West Point firsthand. Invitations to the event will go out in the following weeks. For more information, contact developmentevents@wpaog.org.

Female Infantry Officer Addresses Cadets

  Female Infantry Officer Addresses Cadets

CPT Shaye Haver ’12 spoke recently at an event sponsored by the Modern War Institute at West Point. In 2015, Haver and CPT Kristen Greist ’11 became the first women ever to graduate from the U.S. Army’s grueling Ranger School. They also later became the Army’s first female infantry officers. Haver recounted her experiences in Ranger School and as an infantry officer, offering advice to nearly 200 cadets, many of whom will soon graduate and follow her into the infantry. “Go out and push yourselves every chance you get,” she recommended. “Do it, so when you get to the point (in Ranger School) when you don’t think you can go on, you can say ‘I’ve done something like this before.’” Full story and video.
