West Point Glee Club Honors Tuskegee Airmen


On Jan. 12, the West Point Glee Club ​performed during an ABC Television Network​ special celebrating the opening of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture called “Taking the Stage – Changing America.” During the show, filmed live at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Glee Club delivered a powerful performance during a segment honoring the original Tuskegee Airmen which was narrated by Tom Hanks. Medal of Honor Recipient Discusses “Leadership on your Worst Day”


For the Modern War Institute’s first Speaker Series event of 2017, SSG(R) Salvatore Giunta, the first living Medal of Honor recipient since the Vietnam War era, addressed a packed Ike Hall and delivered a moving lecture about the importance of leadership and trusting one’s team. Receiving a standing ovation from over 800 cadets, Giunta recapped his life trajectory from Subway clerk to member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He joined the US Army after 9/11, he admitted, “for naïve reasons…as a way to leave Iowa and to jump out of planes.” Full Story.

Parachute Team Brings Home the Gold at Nationals

The West Point Parachute Team returned from winter leave with four Gold medals earned at the National Collegiate Parachuting Championships in Arizona. Competing against Air Force and other colleges, the Black Knights also won 8 Silver and 10 Bronze medals. A fifth gold was scored by a cadet (not on the team) in an individual competition. Prior to the championships, the team spent 15 hours training in Vertical Wind Tunnel at Yuma Proving Grounds, giving the cadets the chance to don military rigs and combat equipment and to get some feeling for the military freefall experience. The team made the most of this Margin of Excellence opportunity, completing a total of 868 jumps throughout its time in Arizona.

Kimbrough ’89 Performs 2 Spacewalks in January

It was a busy week for Shane Kimbrough ’89 on the International Space Station. Kimbrough performed spacewalks with fellow astronauts on Jan. 6 and 13, doubling his career total of extravehicular activities (EVAs) to four. Kimbrough is the third USMA grad to command the ISS in the last year (with Tim Kopra ’85 and Jeff Williams ’80). Black Knights Welcome Gio to the Family


The Army West Point men's lacrosse family welcomed its newest member Jan. 16 as Giovanni Toribio signed on to be adopted by the Black Knights. Gio is an energetic four-year old from Ossining, NY, who was recently diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma and was connected with the Black Knights through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.
