Welcome
Free American Flags on the Death of a Veteran
Hi Classmates:
As most of you know,
Any veteran, and all of us are, who dies, is authorized to have a flag provided to his family by the VA. The VA distributes over 500,000 flags a year to a variety of locations, including post offices as part of a program created by Congress in 1958. This was done to make it easy and simple for families to acquire a burial flag. Funeral directors are supposed to know this and should provide one free burial flag from any VA regional office or U.S. post office. They will need a record of discharge, a death certificate, and a completed VA Form 27-2008 (Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes).
To find out if your local post office has a flag call 1-800-275-8777. For additional information go to this URL: http://www.cem.va.gov/burial_benefits/burial_flags.asp.
If you were a cadet and did not graduate or serve in the active service other then that time as a cadet, you are still considered a veteran.
