On the Passing of George Steinbrenner...
7/15/2010

Updated:

From Kevin Anderson, Army Director of Athletics

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Army Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson issued the following statement regarding the passing of New York Yankees Principal Owner George M. Steinbrenner on Tuesday:

“On behalf of the thousands of cadet-athletes whose lives he touched the past several decades, I’d like to pass along my deepest sympathies to the Steinbrenner family and the entire New York Yankee organization. Mr. Steinbrenner has been a dear friend and staunch supporter of our athletic program for many years. His benevolence has provided countless Army baseball players lifetime memories and similarly impacted the lives of so many other West Point cadet.                                      Read more...

From the Times Herald-Record: George Steinbrenner's connection to West Point was a natural given the logistics and his deep admiration for all things military. He made West Point a part of the Yank ee family, a part of the greatest ownership in professional sports.

His monetary donations to the Academy remained private. But the public got to see West Point's musical talents and color guard on a semi-regular basis at Yankee Stadium. For more than two decades, the Yankees have handed Army's baseball team the keys to their minor-league complex in Tampa, Fla., for 10 days or so each spring.

"That entire organization is just first class,'' Army coach Joe Sottolano said a few hours after learning Steinbrenner died on Tuesday morning. "Everything about it, the way they run it, the way they treat you. Here we are using the Yankees' facility, and they are treating us like celebrities.''

"...The best investment you can make is in people...and he knew that.'' Sottolano said. (Photo: Tony Amelio, left, and Alfred Santasiere II hold up the team's 2009 World Series trophy in February in the West Point Mess Hall.

West Point Gathering Examines Endings of US Wars
6/21/2010
Associated Press - WEST POINT, N.Y. -- From Appomattox to the Rhineland and Yorktown to Okinawa, the way American wars started, were fought and ended have influenced subsequent military actions and altered the course of history.  A panel of American historians and military experts is holding a conference at the United States Military Academy to discuss how the outcomes of nearly three centuries of war changed the world.

More than a dozen scholars are gathering Monday [21 June] at West Point to discuss the history of the ends of American wars. The daylong conference features four separate panels with experts on every American war from the Revolution to the first Gulf War.

Organizers say the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, two of the nation's longest wars, will be part of the discussions.

Cadet Chapel Centennial
6/21/2010

At mid-morning on Friday, 11 June 2010, the West Point Community celebrated the Centennial of the magnificent Cadet Chapel, which officially opened on 12 June 1910, following the last service at the Old Cadet Chapel that was located where Bartlett Hall/East Academic Building now stands. After that service, the assembled worshippers then climbed the hill to the new Cadet Chapel. A century later, another group assembled outside Bartlett Hall prayers, hymns and remarks before forming up and marching across Diagonal Walk, past Quarters 100, and up the hill to the Cadet Chapel. There an organ demonstration was provided by Mr. Craig Williams , organist; an historic overview was provided by Mr. Sherman Fleek, USMA Historian, hymns and prayers were offered, and four members of the Alumni Glee Club led the singing of “The Corps. Then, all exited the Cadet Chapel to view the arrival of a commemorative cake provided by &#8221Buddy the Cake Boss” especially for the occasion.

Although very few cadets were available to participate in the ceremony due to duty and leave, three should be singled out for commendation. CDT Robert Smith played the chimes during the march to the chapel, and after the ceremony, CDT Mike Dolan and CDT Kate Goodall stood out in the glaring sun and gradually disassembled the chocolate cake in the shape of the Cadet Chapel, complete with wedding party in blues, and passed out slices to all. Coincidently, Carlo’s Bake Shop from Hoboken, NJ, who delivered the cake, also has been in business since 1910. (Updated 22 June to add Photo slide show)

Patriot for Poland-America Celebration
5/4/2010

Polish-American patriot Thaddeus Kosciuszko may be best known as the man whose name adorns an aging steel bridge on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. But for the local Polish-American community, Kosciuszko is a hero.

[Library of Congress:  ...George Washington personally selected Thaddeus Kosciuszko, one of the heroes of Saratoga, to design the fortifications for West Point in 1778, and Washington transferred his headquarters to West Point in 1779.]

"We don't have too many Polish big shots who also lived in America," said Renata Omelanczuk, a member of Rockland's Polish American Cultural Association. "Kosciuszko was an immigrant like us. We want to remember him."

Polish-Americans from across the county took part in the National Annual Thaddeus Kosciuszko Observance Day at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point recently. The event commemorates Kosciuszko's substantial contributions to American and Polish history. (Portrait, courtesy Wikipedia "before 1812)

NSA's boot camp for cyberdefense
4/23/2010

If you're the kind of person who worries about the security of computer networks, you should know that the National Security Agency is worrying about it too.

Since Tuesday, the NSA has been conducting its 10th annual Cyber Defense Exercise, a competition that pits students from a series of military academies against each other--and against the competition's leaders at NSA--in a bid to see who has the best cyberdefense skills. The idea? To "build and defend computer networks against simulated intrusions by the National Security Agency/Central Security Services Red Team."

The competition will last until Friday [23 April] when that Red team, or "red cell," as it's known, will cease its attacks on the students' newly-built networks. The goal is to help the students learn about the topic of Information Assurance, and how it is used to protect the most vital information systems in the United States and Canada. As they work, the students must defend their networks and offer up consistent reports on what they're doing and on the attacks they're identifying.

This year, eight academies are competing: the United States Military Academy (West Point); the United States Naval Academy; the United States Air Force Academy; the United States Coast Guard Academy; the United States Merchant Marine Academy; the Naval Postgraduate School; the Air Force Institute of Technology; and the Royal Military College of Canada.

...the competition... has been won by West Point for the last three years...

It is heard by thousands of visitors annually, including heads of state, members of Congress, cabinet members and foreign dignitaries."

Boeing, Service Academies Partner for Leadership Development, Engineering Education
4/8/2010

ST. LOUIS, April 8, 2010 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force service academies have formed a major partnership to support the development of future leaders and engineers.

"Developing leaders of character and engineering excellence are two of the cornerstones of Boeing's culture, so today we are announcing an ongoing partnership with three of the United States' premier institutions that share those goals," said Dennis Muilenburg, president and CEO of Boeing Defense, Space & Security.

Boeing has supported a number of individual efforts at the academies for decades. This new initiative is the result of Boeing working with each to develop a high-impact, cohesive learning approach focused on ethics and leadership training; science, technology, engineering and math education (STEM); and diversity outreach aimed at developing and preparing America's future military leaders. In 2010, the three academies will receive $200,000 each to be used in these three areas.

While primarily financed through taxpayer dollars, the academies supplement that funding through individual, foundation and corporate giving to bolster the educational and leadership opportunities offered to cadets, midshipmen and faculty.

"Support from America's citizens and world-class corporations like The Boeing Company is tremendously important in helping West Point produce future leaders of character for our Army and our nation," said retired U.S. Army Col. Robert McClure, CEO and president, West Point Association of Graduates.

Vets, Neighbors Welcome West Point leader--Col. Daniel Bruno
1/29/2010

New Haven Register, CT--23 Jan. 2010--MILFORD — Col. Daniel Bruno, commander of U.S. Army Garrison West Point, relayed a simple yet profound message of gratitude to the men and women who sacrificed life, blood and limb in defense of America and the principle of liberty.

“I’m going to say, ‘Thank you’ for what they do, what they’ve done and what they represent,” Bruno said during a reception held for him and his wife, Kitty.  The event was held at the home of Elliott Storm, a disabled Marine Corps veteran and district judge advocate for the American Legion 2nd District. Bruno is a speaker for the American Legion, Department of Connecticut, weekend Mid-Winter Conference at the Rocky Hill Marriott.

He and Storm became friends last year when Storm, author of the novel “These Scars Are Sacred,” went to West Point to give a presentation on post-traumatic stress disorder and for a book signing.  Storm returned to West Point in November on Veterans Day. He was wounded by a grenade in the Vietnam War and received two Purple Hearts.

Storm gave Connecticut service men and women a chance to meet Bruno, as well as friends, neighbors and state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, a Marine veteran seeking the Democratic Party nod to run for the U.S. Senate.

The incredible privilege of having tea with Frances Hesselbein
1/26/2010

From INC, "The Entrepreneurial Generation" 25 Jan 2010  ... Last month, I had the incredible privilege of having tea with Frances Hesselbein, former CEO of the Girl Scouts, founder of the Leader to Leader Institute, and now the Chair for the Study of Leadership at West Point (she’s the first woman appointee and the first non-graduate of West Point to hold the position).

Ms. Hesselbein, who Peter Drucker described as one of the greatest leaders he had ever met, knows leadership when she sees it. And she told me with great enthusiasm that she views the current generation of cadets at West Point as the most promising group of future leaders she has ever met. Why? “They understand the importance of service,” she said. And she wasn’t talking just about service to one’s country, but to communities in general.

“The first thing they want to tell you about is the volunteer work they’re doing,” she said. I found the same to be to be true among the young entrepreneurs I interviewed for my book: 70% said their companies had a social mission. But make no mistake: they’re laser-focused on the bottom line as well and they understand why growing a profitable, sustainable company that creates jobs is a social good in and of itself.

It’s pretty clear to me: this is a generation worth investing in.

These activities—led by members of the USMA faculty as well as a variety of noted military historians—seek to facilitate detailed discussions of historiography and pedagogy within the field of military history. Upon completion of the seminar, participants are prepared to return to their home institutions and develop or enhance a program in the study of military history.

The generosity of a private donor allows the Summer Seminar to be offered cost-free to participants...

Rather featured a couple of male cadets too, but it was the women, Krysta Cass '10 and Mary Erin Boyle '07, who made the strongest impression

To the petite Boyle, Rather said, "As someone looking at you, and I mean this in no patronizing way, I look at you and I'm going to say: What a beautiful, intelligent young woman, but is she ready for combat?"

"Sir," Boyle replied, "don't let that fool you. I'm tough."
