Feb. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The military memoir by Medal of Honor recipient Colonel Jack Jacobs, USA (Ret.) has won the 2010 Colby Award. Named for the late Ambassador and former CIA Director William E. Colby, the Colby Award recognizes a first work of fiction or non-fiction that has made a significant contribution to the public’s understanding of intelligence operations, military history, or international affairs. The $5,000 award will be presented by Tawani Foundation in association with the Pritzker Military Library on October 22, 2010 at Chicago’s Palmer House Hotel, in partnership with the Library’s 2010 Liberty Gala (pritzkermilitarylibrary.org). At the same time, the $100,000 Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing will be presented. The 2010 recipient will be announced via live webcast from the Library on June 21, 2010. In his memoir, If Not Now, When? (Berkley, 2008), Jacobs describes his childhood in post-World War II New York City, his experiences at Rutgers University where he joined the ROTC program, and how that decision eventually led him to his service in Vietnam. As an advisor to a Vietnamese infantry battalion, Jacobs was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for saving the lives of 13 allied soldiers during an intensive firefight despite severe wounds. “I am honored that my book has been chosen for an award associated with William Colby,” said Jacobs. “His legacy stands as a model for all members of our Armed Forces, past and present.” Jack Jacobs is a faculty member here at the Academy (Dept. of Social Sciences). He is in the chair of Robert F. McDermott Professor of Humanities and Public Affairs. Read more...

Vets, Neighbors Welcome West Point leader--Col. Daniel Bruno

New Haven Register, CT--23 Jan. 2010--MILFORD — Col. Daniel Bruno, commander of U.S. Army Garrison West Point, relayed a simple yet profound message of gratitude to the men and women who sacrificed life, blood and limb in defense of America and the principle of liberty. “I’m going to say, ‘Thank you’ for what they do, what they’ve done and what they represent,” Bruno said during a reception held for him and his wife, Kitty. The event was held at the home of Elliott Storm, a disabled Marine Corps veteran and district judge advocate for the American Legion 2nd District. Bruno is a speaker for the American Legion, Department of Connecticut, weekend Mid-Winter Conference at the Rocky Hill Marriott. He and Storm became friends last year when Storm, author of the novel “These Scars Are Sacred,” went to West Point to give a presentation on post-traumatic stress disorder and for a book signing. Storm returned to West Point in November on Veterans Day. He was wounded by a grenade in the Vietnam War and received two Purple Hearts. Storm gave Connecticut service men and women a chance to meet Bruno, as well as friends, neighbors and state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, a Marine veteran seeking the Democratic Party nod to run for the U.S. Senate.

The incredible privilege of having tea with Frances Hesselbein

From INC, "The Entrepreneurial Generation" 25 Jan 2010 ... Last month, I had the incredible privilege of having tea with Frances Hesselbein, former CEO of the Girl Scouts, founder of the Leader to Leader Institute, and now the Chair for the Study of Leadership at West Point (she’s the first woman appointee and the first non-graduate of West Point to hold the position).
Ms. Hesselbein, who Peter Drucker described as one of the greatest leaders he had ever met, knows leadership when she sees it. And she told me with great enthusiasm that she views the current generation of cadets at West Point as the most promising group of future leaders she has ever met. Why? “They understand the importance of service,” she said. And she wasn’t talking just about service to one’s country, but to communities in general.
“The first thing they want to tell you about is the volunteer work they’re doing,” she said. I found the same to be to be true among the young entrepreneurs I interviewed for my book: 70% said their companies had a social mission. But make no mistake: they’re laser-focused on the bottom line as well and they understand why growing a profitable, sustainable company that creates jobs is a social good in and of itself.
It’s pretty clear to me: this is a generation worth investing in. Read more...

However, most "A"Club members consider enhancing the cadet-athletes experience during their time at the West Point, the greatest benefit of all. The West Point Summer Seminar in Military History, is an intensive three-week program designed to help scholars increase their understanding of the study of war and military history. The West Point Department of History will conduct the 2010 Summer Seminar from June 1-23. The West Point Summer Seminar in Military History seeks to improve the teaching of military history at the collgiate level by broadening its Fellows' knowledge of military history and improving their ability to teach it. The Summer Seminar brings together a select group of historians for a series of seminars, lectures, and staff rides of local Revolutionary fortifications and Civil War battlefields. These activities—led by members of the USMA faculty as well as a variety of noted military historians—seek to facilitate detailed discussions of historiography and pedagogy within the field of military history. Upon completion of the seminar, participants are prepared to return to their home institutions and develop or enhance a program in the study of military history. Politics Daily...I saw it in the faces of two women interviewed by Dan Rather on his 2007 HDNet program "West Point at War." Rather wanted to know what motivated these students who signed up after 9/11. They could not have assumed the war would be over when they graduated. They knew they might end up in a battlefield. Rather featured a couple of male cadets too, but it was the women, Krysta Cass '10 and Mary Erin Boyle '07, who made the strongest impression To the petite Boyle, Rather said, "As someone looking at you, and I mean this in no patronizing way, I look at you and I'm going to say: What a beautiful, intelligent young woman, but is she ready for combat?" "Sir," Boyle replied, "don't let that fool you. I'm tough." Read more...
