Cadet Club News 25 April 2008
The following Club Home Events Are Scheduled African-American Literature Forum (CFAF): Night of the Arts 25 Apr at 1800 at Cullum Hall. Protestant Chapel Choir: Class of 1948 Reunion Service 25 Apr at 1000 at Old Cadet Chapel. Combat Applications Program: Sandhurst Competition Validation 26 Apr at 0500 at the Tronsrue Indoor Range. Judo Team: Hoteikan Judo/Jutistu Clinic 26 Apr 0900 at the Judo Dojo, Bldg 673.
Sailing Team: Army 2 on 2 Team Race 26 Apr at 0900 at the South Dock & Vicinity. String Ensemble (Theater Arts Guild): Superintendent's Reception on 26 Apr 1830 at Quarters 100, West Point, New York.
Pipes and Drums: 29th Annual West Point Tattoo 27 Apr at 1200 at Trophy Point. Sailing Team: Army 2 on 2 Team Race 27 Apr 0900 at the South Dock & Vicinity  Skeet & Trap participated in the Hudson Farm Shoot. This shoot was a tremendous success, combining sporting clays shooting instruction and practice for four cadets. Hudson Farm members worked with and coached cadets in the techniques of "flurry" and "driven bird" shooting. This was a unique opportunity for the cadets to learn about and participate in European-style clay target shooting.
 Chess Club. Cadet Bovey Zhu, 2008, featured on Regis and Kelly Live (ABC) as one of 10 players simultaneously playing Nicholas Nip, 10 years old, the youngest US chess master in history. Bovey lost (final score 9 wins, 1 draw for Nicholas Nip). Bovey was often featured during introductions, breaks, and at the end since his game lasted the longest. Cadet Dave Jacobs was there. He was too highly rated to participate in the exhibition, but he was interviewed by Chess Life Magazine.
Karate competed at the Pennsylvania Karate National Championships. CDT Shane Carlos took 1st place in black belt kata and 2nd place in black belt middle weight sparing. The Following Events Took Place During The Past Week  Women's Lacrosse are league Champions! They traveled to Kingston, RI to play in the ECWLA league championship tournament this weekend. We faced a tough road as we had to play the three teams we had not beaten during the regular season. The team won all three games. These three victories make us league champs and qualify us for an automatic bid to the national tournament in Denver 7-10 May.
Triathlon beat the defending men's and women's national champions (USNA) enroute to a solid third place finish this year.  Orienteering competed at the US Relay and Middle Distance Championships in Rochester, NY. CDT Jordan Laughlin (D3, 2011) won Middle Distance Champion in his age group. The USMA Relay Team placed 3rd in the elite category, the highest result since the early 1980s, winning significant recognition from the orienteering community in addition to their medals.
Men's Rugby traveled to Albuquerque, NM to compete in the National Championship Tournament Sweet 16.  Sailing competed in the Greater New York Dinghy Regatta on 19 Apr, placing 6th in a fleet of 8, beating Stevens and MonmouthCollege. The team is hosting our annual 2 on 2 team race next weekend (26 & 27 Apr) at South Dock. 8 area schools are slated to attend. The racing starts at 0900 each day, so come out and see your sailing team in action. At another regatta Sailing also faced fierce competition with some of the most optimal weather provided for two great days of sailing. Both the A and B team beat Navy in 4 races total (But not enough to beat them in the overall regatta.
Mountaineering executed another successful trip to the Gunks. Omar Shaikh, Mountaineering, at the top of his first trad lead.
Boxing attended the finals of the NYC Golden Gloves as the guests of the New York Daily News. During intermission, the club's Collegiate National Championship was announced to the crowd and two of the individual champions, Danilo Garcia and Steve Solaja, were invited into the ring along with other boxing celebrities.

Two Flying Club cadets continued their flight training at DutchessCountyAirport in Poughkeepsie this past weekend. With improving weather this month, expect even more participation in the coming weeks!
Marathon competed in a 5K road race in Durham, NH commemorating the 5th anniversary of the death of Todd Heuchling. The Marathon team was incredibly happy to participate in the race and honored to be a part of remembering Todd's contributions to his school and his country.
Speech competed against the highest level of competition as a tune up for nationals. The three Army teams finished 2-3, 2-3 and 1-4. Logistically, everything went perfect.  American Chemical Society spent two days in WashingtonD.C., touring WalterReedArmyMedicalCenter, the Uniformed Services Health School (USUHS), and GeorgetownUniversityMedicalSchool.
Sailing placed fourth of eight in the 2008 Leroy Grant Regatta hosted by the Navy and travelled to the United StatesNavalAcademy to compete in the Navy 26 Keelboat Invitational.
 The combined Foreign Language Clubs (Spanish, Portuguese, German, Polish, French, Russian, Arabic, and Chinese) traveled with 88 cadets to Washington, DC. The activities included visits to the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon, various embassies, the HolocaustMuseum, the Pan-American Health Organization, the Smithsonian, and a variety of regionally specific restaurants.
Theater Arts Guild traveled to NCY to attend a showing of "Betrayed" by George Packer at the Culture Project.
Men's Volleyball attended the NIRSA National Collegiate Club Volleyball Championships in Dallas, Texas from 12-14 Apr. Over 250 men's and women's collegiate club volleyball teams participated in the annual event in several divisions.
