Army Vice Chief Announces Center of Excellence at WPAOG Leaders' Conference 20 August 2007 2007 Video Coverage
During the period from Wednesday through Saturday of last week, the Academy served as the setting for the Class of 1967 Alumni Leaders’ Conference. The event brought together West Point society leaders, class leaders, members of the WPAOG Board of Directors, the Alumni Support Committee, and the Academy staff and faculty for a series of presentations, discussions, and other events. Among of the Conference’s highlights was its Friday evening dinner, where the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, GEN Richard Cody ’72, gave the keynote speech and announced that the Academy had been designated an Army Center of Excellence for the Professional Military Ethic. The Center, which is regarded as crucial to the continued vitality of the Army, will contribute directly to the development of soldiers and officers who can meet the morally ambiguous challenges of the complex 21st century security environment. The Conference had begun with a golf outing on Wednesday morning and an optional new facilities tour that afternoon. Then on Thursday, Conference sessions included welcoming remarks from the WPAOG Chairman, LTG (R) Ted Stroup ’62, an Academy update by the Superintendent, LTG Buster Hagenbeck ’71, a presentation by the Deputy Director of Admissions, COL Deb McDonald ’85, brief remarks by Coach Stan Brock, and an overview of the Honor System by the Com’s Special Assistant for Honor Matters, LTC Todd Messitt ‘87. On Friday, LTC Dave Jones ’85 showed attendees how to execute high school ethics workshops. They also received a report from the WPAOG’s new President, COL (R) Bob McClure ’76, and learned from a staff and faculty panel about the kind of intellectual capital that West Point is providing to the Army. At that day’s luncheon, COL (R) Mike Jordan, MOAA’s Director of Contract Services and Marketing, presented a summary of the issues facing MOAA and the other members of the Military Coalition as they work to preserve and enhance benefits for members of the military. On both Thursday and Friday afternoon, class leaders and society leaders went to separate breakout sessions where they received presentations and held discussions that were relevant to their respective constituencies. One exception to the afternoon separation of the groups occurred when they came together for a panel, entitled “What’s New at USMA,” on Friday afternoon. The Class of 1967 provided the lead gift in support of the Conference. MOAA sponsored it at the Gold level, and AUSA provided additional funding. The WPAOG is grateful for the support of these sponsors.
